چکیده

We investigate how path failure influences Concurrent Multipath Transfer (CMT) using SCTP multihoming. We show that CMT suffers from significant ‘‘receive buffer blocking” which degrades performance during both permanent and short-term failure. To improve performance, we introduce a new ‘‘Potentially-Failed” (PF) destination state, and revise CMT’s failure detection and (re)transmission policies to include the PF state. Using simulation, we demonstrate that the modification called CMT-PF outperforms CMT during failure – even with aggressive failure detection thresholds and varying receive buffer constraints. In non-failure scenarios, CMT-PF performs on par or better but never worse than CMT. Finally, we confirm these simulation results using FreeBSD implementations of CMT and CMT-PF. Based on our findings, we recommend CMT-PF be used in existing and future CMT implementations and RFCs. 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Performance Metrics of Multipath State Aware Concurrent Multipath Transfer using Redundant Transfer in Stream Control Transmission Protocol Multihoming for Symmetric Paths

Problem statement: In multihomed host, if data transfer starts using CMT, unaware of paths status causes delay in data transfer or packet loss due to path failure. Transmission Path (one or more paths) failures result in out-of-order data delivery causing receiver buffer blocking and preventing sender from transmitting further data. Approach: Multipath State Aware Concurrent Multipath Transfer ...

Concurrent Multipath Transfer using SCTP Multihoming: Transmission Policies using Potentially-failed Destination State

Previously, we identified the failure-induced receive buffer (rbuf) blocking problem in Concurrent Multipath Transfer using SCTP multihoming (CMT), and proposed CMT with a Potentially-failed destination state (CMT-PF) to alleviate rbuf blocking. In this paper we complete our evaluation of CMT vs. CMT-PF. Using NS-2 simulations we first show that CMT-PF performs on par or better than CMT during ...

Evaluating Multipath TCP Resilience against Link Failures

Standard TCP is the de facto reliable transfer protocol for the Internet. It is designed to establish a reliable connection using only a single network interface. However, standard TCP with single interfacing performs poorly due to intermittent node connectivity. This requires the re-establishment of connections as the IP addresses change. Multi-path TCP (MPTCP) has emerged to utilize multiple ...

Temporary Redundant Transmission Mechanism for SCTP Multihomed Hosts

In SCTP's Concurrent Multipath Transfer, if data is sent to the destined IP(s) without knowledge of the paths condition, packets may be lost or delayed. This is because of the bursty nature of IP traffic and physical damage to the network. To offset these problems, network path status is examined using our new mechanism Multipath State Aware Concurrent Multipath Transfer using redundant transmi...
